Choosing the right exhaust fan

Exhaust fans are integral in bathrooms, ensuites and powder rooms for preventing and removing moisture, odour and generally maintaining a pleasant environment.
Without proper ventilation, there is a very real risk that moisture and mould can build up – making extra work in cleaning and maintenance, and potential longer term health problems.
Left unchecked over a longer period, it can cause more serious issues, such as structural damage to the property.
Size matters
It is critical to choose a fan with sufficient airflow to ensure that it is fit for purpose and can handle the volume of steam created in your bathroom.
To work out which exhaust is going to be adequate for your space, there are a number of things to consider. Firstly, calculate the volum of the room by multiplying the height, width, and length.
The second factor to consider is the number of air changes that are required – meaning how many times the fan has extracted the total volume of air from the room. What is appropriate will differ depending on the type of room. For example, we recommend 10 air changes per hour for a powder room, toilet or laundry, and 15-25 air changes per hour (depending upon the size of your room and adequate levels of cross ventilation) for a full bathroom with shower. If you are in a more humid location (hello Queenslanders!) or have a ducting run of 2m or more, you might want to consider a more powerful exhaust too.
To calculate the extraction capacity of the exhaust required, multiply the size of the room by the number of air changes required.
